With its multi-functionality, spineless cactus has become one of the most promising 'under-utilized species' of the dry regions. Used for centuries by traditional rural farmers, it is only since ICARDA's peer-reviewed research and dryland testing alongside National Agricultural Research System partners. that its potential has become more widely recognized and understood. It is now inducted into further ICARDA and international research and food systems as an essential crop to sustain the livelihood of vulnerable smallholders across global arid and semi-arid areas.
ICARDA also promotes spineless cactus pear (nicknamed the "green-gold") as a source of fodder for livestock, as it offers a high nutritional value, is rich in carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, and water, and provides enormous health benefits in the reduction of cholesterol and triglyceride levels. As a hardy, quality fruit for human consumption with minimal agronomic inputs, ICARDA promotes its potential for generating additional income for smallholder farmers across the dry areas.
