The World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT) is a global Network sharing the same aim to document, share, and apply sustainable land management (SLM) knowledge. A pioneer in transformative action for SLM, the Network establishes an innovative space for sharing and scaling good practices to address land degradation, climate change, and biodiversity loss. This facilitates local, national, regional and global knowledge sharing and analysis of which good practices work where, how and why, and what are their costs and benefits
WOCAT 2020+ aims to be a leading and collaborative platform of expertise and a major transformative force in supporting countries and institutions around the world to scale up SLM, achieve LDN, and foster related sustainable development goals (SDG) addressed by the three Rio conventions, UNCCD, UNFCCC and CBD. Building on the vast knowledge of the global SLM database and new partnership actions, WOCAT 2020+ will synthesize local, national and regional experiences, conduct and facilitate targeted research and disseminate lessons learned.
Objective 1: Importance of SLM and evidence of its multiple contributions to sustainable development are acknowledged and put into action by key stakeholders at local to global scales.
Objective 2: Decision support tools, analyses and synthesis products are used at all scales to shape strategies and priority setting for scaling up SLM and achieving the conservation and restoration of ecosystems.
Objective 3: Key leverage points for the acceleration of SLM uptake are identified at all scales and put into use by WOCAT2020+ partner organizations for achieving sustainable landscapes.
WOCAT 2020+ will bring together, guide, and support its network partners to harness pathways towards sustainable landscapes. While the choice of concrete pathways is strongly dependent on social-environmental characteristics in the targeted contexts, WOCAT 2020+ will tackle four key entry points with its network partners:
UPDATES
In 2020, ICARDA’s Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Team developed tools such as the WOCAT digital explorer and the Central Asia Climate Portal. These tools pool valuable data and knowledge such as climate information and global agricultural innovations from official international sources to support organizations, policymakers, and researchers in decision-making, monitoring, and learning.
In 2021, ICARDA was thrilled when WOCAT published information on 10 ICARDA innovations. Our innovations, submitted by ICARDA’s MEL team, can now be referenced by agricultural experts all over the world, fulfilling ICARDA’s core vision of open-source knowledge sharing.
In 2022, ICARDA released two WOCAT publications on relay intercropping lentil-quinoa and lentil-onion. Also, Cactus pear development and adaption were strengthened by an informative newsletter sent to beneficiaries, registration under WOCAT, and by launching the Arabic version of the book through an event organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
