About

The India Collaborative Program between the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and ICARDA was set up for a period of three years (2014-15/2016-17) to promote, among other areas, community-based pasture management, improvement of small ruminants' productivity, feeding strategies and integration of crop-livestock systems, and development of high yielding barley genotypes for malting, food, feed and dual purposes for different agro-ecological conditions of India.

Impact

Goals
To promote increased system productivity through diversification and intensification in India, the India Collaborative Program goals are, among others, to empower agro-pastoral communities through the reinforcement of local institutions and their effective participation in designing, implementing and monitoring of rangeland/livestock related intervention, and to select most suitable variety/genotype for fruits/fodder and disseminate it to farmers based on optimal use of Cactus cladodes.
Objectives
The project aims at enhancing livestock productivity in low rainfall regions of India through promoting sustainable community-based rangeland management techniques, enhancing utilization potential of fruits and fodder (i.e. Opuntia ficus-indica), and promoting strategies to reverse the negative effects of land degradation, biodiversity loss, gap in feed resources, low income and food insecurity.
