Project Name
Cooperation Programs Between ICARDA And The National Agricultural Research Programs of Arab Countries

About

ICARDA sees capacity development activities at the heart of its mandate, with a vision of strengthening the national capacities of its partner countries to achieve their own goals in the areas of food security and agricultural development. The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD), through its Annual Grant to ICARDA, is supporting that vision by substantially contributing to the development of young scientists and research organizations in the Arab Countries.

Impact

Goals

The AFESD project aims to support and develop cooperation programs between ICARDA and national agricultural research programs of Arab countries, including providing support in organizing training courses for qualified Arab technical personnel so they can benefit from ICARDA's research. It is hoped that by enabling young Arab scientists to engage in newly-developed agricultural research topics and methodologies, they will gain relevant scientific knowledge and strengthen institutional research capacities at the national level.

Objectives

The objectives of the research are to: ensure a basic science capacity in targeted Arab countries, including a capacity to deliver science-based solutions on the ground; support ICARDA Regional Centres of Excellence to share knowledge and facilities amongst Arab countries; maintain an open flow of people, knowledge and resources among Arab countries through policies that facilitate exchanges within and beyond Arab countries; contribute to a new Science for Agricultural Transformation Initiative through partnership with agricultural research institutions and universities that will provide incentives for all Arab countries to invest in science.

Impact pathways

Through the AFESD research grant program, young Arab scientists can link their MSc or PhD studies in agricultural research with the expertise of experienced ICARDA scientists. The program will build skills of the selected researchers and their institutions by giving them new experience in basic and applied research, and by filling critical capacity gaps in their National Agricultural Research Systems. In this way, new opportunities in knowledge exchange will be created, as candidates will be linked to a network of counterparts from different international research centers. Ultimately, the program will contribute to the transfer of newly-created knowledge, research methodologies and technologies to farmers' organizations and colleague researchers, in the perspective of enhancing agricultural quality and productivity in the Arab region.
