Integrated Desert Farming for Resilient Livelihoods (IDFRL) Project Launch Event

ICARDA is happy to launch a new project on Integrated Desert Farming for Resilient Livelihoods (IDFRL) in Egypt. Thanks to the generous support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Embassy of Spain in Egypt, ICARDA - together with its implementing partners - will establish demonstration sites across five governorates in Upper Egypt.

The project will be launched on Monday, February 5th, 2024 in Cairo in the presence of high-level dignitaries including representatives from AECID and the Spanish Embassy, as well as of national implementing partners such as the Agricultural Research Center, the National Water Research Center and the Desert Research Center. 

The project aims to contribute to transformed and resilient desert farming for food, nutrition, and water security in the face of climate change. The demonstration sites will showcase climate-smart low-cost as well as high-end integrated desert farming innovations. The goals include increasing the adoption of integrated desert farming, reducing water and energy consumption, addressing the feed gap, creating job opportunities for youth and women, and reducing climate-induced migration. The project also aims to bring these integrated innovations to scale and engage various stakeholders, including farmers, private actors, and government institutions, to build capacity and create solutions for integrated desert farming.
