Baku Climate Action Week
The Baku Climate Action Week, occurring from Monday, September 30th to Friday, October 4th, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan, serves as a pivotal moment in the climate agenda as global preparations intensify for COP29 in Baku in November 2024.
Building on the momentum from the UN General Assembly and New York Climate Week, this event will propel forward the climate roadmap outlined by the Climate COP Presidencies Troika and bolster the COP29 Presidency’s 14-point Action Agenda.
ICARDA will be represented by Dr. Vinay Nangia, Research Leader for Soil, Water, and Agronomy. As part of a CGIAR delegation, he will share his expertise on resilient agri-food systems in Central/West Asia and beyond, along with innovations in water management for dryland agriculture in different workshops. Moreover, he will lead a distinguished panel discussion on Tuesday, October 1st, focusing on the unveiling of the 2024 Breakthrough Agenda Report on Agriculture. This report, spearheaded by CGIAR, stands as the inaugural standalone publication within the Breakthrough Agenda series (originated by global leaders at COP26), aiming to instill sustainable practices in agriculture and present actionable recommendations for sector-specific initiatives that governments and non-state entities should jointly undertake. Notably, the report addresses the primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions within the agrifood sector—fertilizers and livestock.
Uniting a diverse array of stakeholders from policy, private enterprise, finance, trade and investment, academia, cities, culture, civil society, and media, the Baku Climate Action Week, with its blend of international perspectives and local insights, represents the logical progression from Bonn, London Climate Action Week, and New York, as it lays the groundwork for a successful COP29.
